How Restylane Differs From Botox
Restylane and Botox treat different signs of aging, though both are administered through injections. Restylane is a filler that adds volume beneath the skin with a smooth gel to treat static lines and fill in hollow areas. Neuromodulator products like Botox and Dysport relax muscles in the face to help keep the skin smooth during expressions. With Restylane, you’ll see results right away, and with neuromodulators, you’ll see results after three to seven days. Often, the two cosmetic injectables are combined in one visit.
How Restylane Compares to Other Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Each brand of hyaluronic acid has a different manufacturing process, which affects how it performs once injected. Several Restylane products use NASHA technology, a process that cross-links hyaluronic acid with minimal chemical modification so the product is as close to the hyaluronic acid your body already produces as possible. Other filler brands use different cross-linking methods that change the gel’s firmness and how easily it moves through a needle. Certain health factors may cause us to recommend delaying treatment or choosing a different option. For example, Restylane is typically not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when there is an active infection or irritation near the injection site. It is not a good option for those who have an allergy to any of the ingredients in Restylane, including lidocaine, which is included in most formulations. We will look at your full health and treatment history before moving forward with the injections.
Longevity
Restylane is temporary by design and is a good option for those who aren’t ready to commit to any permanent changes. If you want to maintain your results, you will need to schedule maintenance treatments every few months. The longevity will depend on the specific Restylane product. Some last six months, while others last up to two years.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Your First Restylane Treatment
Step One: Preparing Your Skin
Your provider will cleanse the treatment area and mark the specific points where Restylane will be placed. We use a topical numbing cream before the injections to make them more comfortable, which will need time to take effect before we begin. You should avoid alcohol and any medications or supplements that thin the blood for about 24 hours before your appointment to lower your bruising risk.
Step Two: Injections
We use a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula during injections, depending on the area we are treating and the depth of our injections. Cannulas reach a wider area through a single entry point, which means fewer needle sticks. We also use vibration distraction to increase your comfort.
Step Three: Adjustments and Aftercare Instructions
Once we fill the area, we will check both sides of your face for symmetry and massage the area to distribute the product evenly beneath your skin. We can make small adjustments on the spot until the result matches your goals. What to Expect After Your Restylane Treatment
Mild swelling and bruising are normal for the first few days. You can follow these steps to help you recover and protect your results:
- Ice the Treatment Area: Apply ice wrapped in a cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time on the first day to reduce swelling.
- Skip Exercise: Avoid exercise for 24 hours, since a raised heart rate can increase swelling and bruising.
- Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinning Medications: Both increase bruising risk, so skip alcohol and check with your doctor before resuming any blood thinner or supplement.
- Avoid Makeup Over Injection Sites: Wait at least six hours before applying makeup to the treated area to lower the risk of irritation.
